Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is a prominent Ugandan lawyer, politician, and diplomat. She has been a key figure in Ugandan politics, serving as the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda from 2011 to 2021, making her the first woman to hold this influential position. Born on May 24, 1956, in Kamuli District, Kadaga pursued law at Makerere University, later advancing her studies in international law and diplomacy. Her career spans over three decades, including roles as a member of parliament for Kamuli District, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, and Deputy Speaker of Parliament. Throughout her career, Kadaga has been an advocate for women’s rights and empowerment, championing gender equality and pushing for reforms that support the education and health of Ugandan women.
Kadaga’s influence extends beyond Uganda as she has played significant roles in regional and international politics. She has been active within the East African Community (EAC) and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), where she has represented Uganda on global stages.
